Cranberry Almond Panforte (pronounced Pan-FOR-tay) is an Italian cake made from dried fruits, nuts, and spices. It is traditionally served sliced thin and paired with cheese as an appetizer or with coffee as a dessert. We think it tastes great with brie or pecorino romano.

A Tuscan Tradition Since 1200.

The ancient home of panforte or “strong bread” is Siena, a city in the famous Tuscany region of Italy. Thought to have been created around the year 1200 by nuns in an abbey near Siena, panforte was a cake prepared from dried fruits, nuts, honey and the once exotic spices brought back to Italy by the Crusaders. Because these spices were considered to have healing properties, panforte was first sold as a medicine by medieval pharmacists that jealously guarded their secret recipes.
